Federico Faggin, the inventor of the microprocessor.

Born in Vicenza, Italy in 1941, physicist, engineer and successful entrepreneur Federico Faggin is considered the father of the microchip.

Best known for actively contributing to one of the major projects of the microprocessor Intel 4004, the world's first commercial microprocessor, Faggin led the engineering team at the Intel Corporation. The Intel 4004 microprocessor was launched on the market in November 1971, was developed for use in electronic calculators, and later found its way into other varieties, such as communication terminals, measuring instruments, and industrial controls.

The introduction of the Intel 4004 revolutionized the electronics industry, making it possible to implement complex data processing in smaller, less expensive devices. It paved the way for the era of personal computers and helped define the evolution of computer technology, setting the stage for the modern digital age.

Before joining Intel, Faggin worked at Fairchild Semiconductor, where he contributed to the development of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuits.

In 1974 he co-founded the Zilog company, where he developed the microprocessor Z80, another major success in the microprocessor industry, differing from the Intel 4000 in its more complex design, which made it more suitable for a wide range of applications, from personal computers to embedded systems.

In 1986 Faggin, co-founded and directed Synaptics, with the help of a team of highly skilled professionals, the firm played a key role in the development of the first touchpads and touch screens.

Synaptics was founded with the goal of developing advanced human-machine interfaces. Their work has focused on using sensory technologies to create more intuitive and efficient input devices. Over the years, the company has worked on the development of various technologies, including touchpads, touch screens, and fingerprint sensors.

Not only do we remember Faggin, but the microprocessor, the touchpad, in particular, has become one of Synaptics' flagship products. This input device has been integrated into a wide range of devices, from laptops to mobile devices, offering users a convenient and intuitive way to navigate and interact with their devices.

Synaptics has continued to be a leader in the innovation of user interfaces and input technologies, continuously developing new solutions to improve the user experience in electronic devices. Its influence in the technology industry has been significant, helping to shape the way we interact with technology.

Today Federico Faggin, together with his wife, heads the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation, which supports various programs at universities and research institutes aimed at promoting the development of the understanding of consciousness through theoretical and experimental research.
